A BILL FOR AN ACT TO ALTER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA CAP. C23 LAWS OF THE FEDERATION OF NIGERIA, 2004 FOR THE CREATION OF ANIOMA STATE AND FOR MATTERS CONNECTED THEREWITH
Be it Enacted by the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as follows:
- The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Cap. C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (in this Bill referred to as “the Principal Act”) is altered as set out hereunder:
- Section 3(1) of the Principal Act is altered by deleting the words “thirty-six” in the first line of the said subsection and replacing same with the words “thirty-seven” and inserting the word “ANIOMA” in the second line immediately after the word “ANAMBRA” and before the word “BAUCHI”

Therefore, the new Section 3(1) shall read thus:
Section 3(1) There shall be thirty seven States in Nigeria, that is to say, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Anioma, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamafara. -
That the First Schedule, Part 1 of States of the Federation is hereby altered by inserting Anioma State, Local Government Areas and Capital City in the appropriate columns of the First, Second and Third columns immediately after Anambra State and before Bauchi State to read thus:
State: Anioma
Local Government Areas: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North-East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Ukwuani.
Capital City: Asaba - This Bill shall be cited as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, alteration bill, 2024.
EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM
This bill seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1, States of the Federation, of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to provide for the creation of ANIOMA STATE. The creation of this state aims to serve the cause of equity and justice by increasing the number of South Eastern states to six, bringing them on par with the other geographical regions of Nigeria. This change will also increase and equalize the number and voting strength of their representatives at the National Assembly. Additionally, it is intended to boost the political, economic, and social advancement of the homogenous people of Anioma, who share a common language, social, and cultural heritage.
