The Igbo Women Assembly, in collaboration with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, joined the global community in commemorating the International Mother Tongue Day, an annual observance established by the United Nations to promote linguistic and cultural diversity across the world.
To mark the occasion, the Anioma State Creation Supporters Movement and Akuruoulo Media International converged in Awka, Anambra State, alongside other stakeholders and cultural advocates, on the 21st of February, 2026. The event featured lectures, speeches, and cultural engagements focused on preserving the Igbo language and strengthening cultural identity among Ndigbo.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultural identities, while also reinforcing the need for political and structural recognition of all Igbo-speaking communities. The gathering also served as a strategic platform for advancing advocacy for the creation of Anioma State. The Anioma State Creation Supporters Movement used the opportunity to increase public awareness and mobilize broader grassroots support for the proposed state.

Speaking, former National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Chuks Ibegbu, commended indigenous Igbos in Rivers State for their resilience and renewed efforts in asserting their Igbo identity through organized programs and increased cultural visibility. He urged them to continue supporting their illustrious son, Senator John Azuta Mbata, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Chief Ibegbu further praised the various Igbo sub-groups in Rivers State for uniting through associations and structured networks aimed at strengthening their collective voice and presence both within Igboland and across Nigeria. He also called on Igbos residing in the Middle Belt and other parts of the South-South region to boldly assert their Igbo identity and cultural heritage. According to him, such unity and cultural consciousness are essential in amplifying the collective demand for equity, recognition, and the long-standing aspiration for the creation of Anioma State.
